African Journal of Education (AJCE) and Mylab

Collaboration between the North-West University – Mylab group and international scientists and educators form an integral part of the development of the Mylab-project.

One of these collaboration projects is with Prof Lise Kvittingen and Dr Per-odd Eggen from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway. The group in Norway imported Mylab kits for their research in Norway schools.

The group in Norway are also busy with a research project in Ethiopia in collaboration with colleagues of Dilla University. Me Marie du Toit, one of the team leaders of Mylab, visited Norway several times to give her input to the research work. Mylab kits were exported to Dilla University in Ethiopia. The result of the research work is an article published in May 2014 in the African Journal of Education (AJCE) by Gebrekidan Tesfamariam, Annette Lykknes and Lise Kvittingen. p48

Title: Small-scale chemistry for a hands-on approach to chemistry practical work in secondary schools: experiences from Ethiopia

In assessing the workshop, one can only describe it by using superlatives such as “interesting”, “incredible”, “astonishing” and “amazing”. Importantly, the workshop was so engrossing (interesting, gripping) that it really did justice to the age-old cliché of “bringing science to life”. It really opened our (teacher’s) eyes of how we could meaningfully engage our learners and also cultivate a lasting love for Physical Science in our learners. We really noted that if we, as Physical Science teachers, could do more practical work, we would make our learners understand the subject better and thus improve their performance.

Importantly, as teachers it also exposed our shortcomings regarding practical work. By this I am trying to bring forth the fact that very few of us conducted practicals regularly (i.e at least once a week) for our learners. The reason for this may vary, but the Mylab presentation showed us that we that we do not need expensive apparatus to conduct practicals. Thus, there is no need not to conduct practicals.

Lastly the facilitator had this wonderful and genuine love for what she was doing. It instinctively rubbed off on the participants. Secondly, her style of presentation really engaged us and made time to fly even though we were there for the whole day. She really engaged us and talked us through the idea of practical work. We left the workshop being positive in our mindset in terms of the value of practical work. Importantly, we learned that simple, everyday materials can be used. Thus, apparatus and material need not be expensive.
